Our heating engineers at Prestige are more than happy to offer you advice and help on how to reduce your carbon footprint as well as your fuel bills. Boilers account for approximately 55 per cent of what you spend in a year on your energy bills, so an efficient boiler makes a big difference.

Why are new boilers more efficient?

Modern boilers are more efficient for a number of reasons, but their main advantage is that they are all condensing boilers. All well-maintained boilers burn their fuel very efficiently, but inevitably they lose some heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue. A condensing boiler has a larger heat exchanger so it recovers more heat and sends cooler gases up the flue making it more efficient.

Types of Boilers

Regular/Conventional Boilers

If you have an older boiler, the chances are that you will have a regular boiler also known as a ‘conventional’ boiler.

Regular boilers heat your central heating system and also produce your hot water which sits in your hot water cylinder ordinarily situated in an Airing Cupboard.

A typical regular boiler system incorporates a boiler, extended controls, and a hot water cylinder. The hot water cylinder is often fed by a cold water storage cistern and a feed and expansion cistern all of which are generally located in the loft.

Combi Boilers

A Combi boiler provides heating and hot water directly from the boiler. A combi boiler is both a highly efficient water heater and a central heating boiler combined.

Combi boilers now account for over 50% of all new boilers installed in the UK every year. One of the benefits of a combi boiler is that hot water is delivered directly through your taps or shower at mains pressure. A further benefit is that a combi boiler does not require a hot water cylinder so there is no requirement for an Airing cupboard therefore saving on space within your home.

System boilers

A system boiler directly heats your central heating system and produces hot water for your cylinder.

A system boiler, just like a regular boiler works on the principle of stored hot water in the how water cylinder. However, a system boiler differs from a regular boiler in some important areas.

  • The hot water is pumped from the system boiler through the central heating system to the radiators and hot water cylinder, resulting in a fast response and more economical running costs. The system boiler removes the need for a feed and expansion cistern in the loft.
  • The main individual components of the heating and hot water system are built into a system boiler, which means that installation is quicker, easier and neater.

The best option for you will depend on a number of factors:

  • Do you use a lot of hot water? – A large family using lots of hot water may be better off with a regular boiler or a system boiler and a smaller household using less hot water may find it more economical to have a combi boiler.
  • Are you short of space? – A combi boiler doesn’t need a hot water cylinder so requires less space, therefore can be often be installed without an airing cupboard.
